On the Hoof
Journey back to a time when the horse was the most important mode of transport. On the Hoof charts the development of the ‘cart’ as an agricultural vehicle transporting animals, food and people around the country.
The exhibition illustrates how the construction of horse-drawn vehicles changed, looking at wheel design, the differences between urban and rural needs, and the use of more modern materials in their production.
Horse-drawn vehicles such as these were not restricted to the rural or farm environment. The growth in their commercial use is reflected in some of the more elaborate vehicles promoting their local business through beautifully painted signwriting.
