xocean - innovation at sea

Learn about the work Clodagh Cunningham and Anastasia Blinova do at XOCEAN, a company based in Ireland which gathers and analyses data about our oceans and seas.

Innovation at Sea

Anastasia and Clodagh both work for XOCEAN, a company based in Ireland which gathers and analyses data about our oceans and seas. This includes designing and building Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). As engineers and developers they use technology creatively to solve problems and drive innovation.

Anastasia works on making USVs smarter and more efficient. She has played a key role in enhancing the controls used by pilots and optimising the systems that monitor and protect the vessels. Her work supports the collection of real-time data that is essential to the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

Clodagh leads Survey and Data teams who analyse information about all aspects of the ocean. She pioneers new ways to gather and understand this data, including using artificial intelligence, to make it work for practical applications.

Anastasia is a Software Developer who has worked on a project with the International Space Station (ISS). At XOCEAN she is developing a web application platform to manage Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). It allows the vessels to be remotely controlled and monitored by pilots as they survey the seabed.

Anastasia holds a degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College, Dublin. Inspired by the Rosetta mission which landed on a comet, she gained a Master’s in Space Science and Technology, bridging her love for space with practical technological solutions.

Anastasia is passionate about encouraging more people, especially women, to enter technology and engineering fields. She believes that innovation thrives when different perspectives come together.

Clodagh studied mechanical engineering at Queens University Belfast and went on to do a Master’s degree in Engineering Computation. Clodagh developed a love for technology and how things worked from a young age and was inspired to study mechanical engineering while visiting an open day and seeing the applications
of mechanical solutions in the prosthetics and medical devices.

Clodagh has over 20 years’ experience in delivering and managing complex projects across Europe, Canada and Asia.

Clodagh has gained extensive experience in project management, commercial and business development. Currently Survey Lead for XOCEAN, Clodagh is responsible for the overall survey project, data acquisition to a high standard and leading the team of Surveyors and Data Processors to deliver the end result to the clients specifications.

Clodagh plays a key role in delivering projects to develop new methods to acquire and process XOCEAN data including artificial intelligence and machine learning.
